Case Study - Diabetes and Infertility

by Sassy Braisby

"Jasmine" is a young woman aged 28 years old. Juvenile Diabetic, diagnosed in 1988. Pancreas functions inefficiently currently requiring 3 injections per day plus maintaining diet control. Previously throughout childhood Blood Sugar Levels (BSL) were monitored closely with signs of developing diabetes in the future. Since then approximately 5 years ago the Pancreas ceased to function at all. This occurred after Jasmine contracted an infection from a bad dose of flu which resulted in falling into a diabetic coma from Ketoacidosous. Afterwards the insulin was initially increased to four injections per day with an increase in insulin.

Jasmine is also currently trying to conceive, and the doctors feel that ovulation is not occurring properly and that the Progesterone hormone level is not high enough. Blood tests have confirmed this. Currently on Clomid treatment to correct the problem. All other physical tests seem normal, hopefully with positive outcome.

Other ailments are: bronchular asthmatic, allergic to dairy products, allergic to Penicillin and most antibiotics.

Recommended Treatment:

Pelargonium graveolens (Geranium) in an oil burner: during the day at work, generally for the whole day. Also occasionally at night. This treatment has been maintained since May 1998.

Outcomes:

1. Juvenile Diabetic (Insulin Dependent):

Jasmine started using Pelargonium graveolens to assist in reducing her BSL's and insulin intake. Insulin can cause a weight problem. Jasmine has a family history of obesity which she does not want to inherit if at all possible. She is currently in her correct weight range but has to keep to a strict diet to maintain it. Jasmine has lowered her insulin intake (insulin quantities, not injections) and has maintained sugar/carbohydrate intake to monitor it correctly. The results have been quite surprising. The BSL's have dropped quite considerably.

2. Possible Infertility:

Jasmine started using Pelargonium graveolens to correct a possible hormonal imbalance. She had a blood test in March 1998 and the Progesterone hormone level was 17mg which was below the average of between 20mg and 100mg. This test was completed after being on the Clomid treatment for one month. The doctor explained that the hormone was there but possibly not enough to ovulate properly.

After staying on the Clomid treatment for a further two months without conceiving, Jasmine was taken off for a month for further internal tests. The test proved to be positive and the only problem seems to be the hormonal imbalance. The following month she was put back on the Clomid treatment, double dosage this time, to see whether that would correct the problem.

At the end of June 1998 after being on the Clomid treatment again for one month, Jasmine had a second blood test and the reading was 110mg. The doctor explained that the Clomid treatment had helped and that she was to stay on a double dose for another three months unless she conceives in the meantime. Jasmine questioned the doctor regarding the unbelievable rise of the hormone levels from 17mg to 110mg, and explained her use of essential oils for hormonal imbalance. Doctor replied that he feels that the essential oils must have assisted in the rise also as it would be unlikely that the Progesterone hormone level would jump from below average to above average just by doubling the dosage of Clomid treatment.

Jasmine has since decided to come off the Clomid treatment due to the many complications and side effects of Clomid. She is going to continue with the essential oils at this stage, as she feels that the "Natural Way" is the "Only Way".

Both outcomes are still being monitored and the gradual introduction of new oils will take place over the next few months.

Any questions or suggestions you may have would be much appreciated.

AGORA, The Aromatherapy Global Online Research Archives is a unique non-commercial, website, contributed to by about eighty people world-wide. We are working to promote the serious, intelligent and SAFE use of essential oils for healing the body, mind and spirit. The various pages on this website are hosted in different places, internationally, reflecting the worldwide nature of the interest and participation in aromatherapy. The origin of this project came from a dream of Michel Vanhove, who hosts the official homepage.
I expressed an old dream on the idma aromatherapy mailing list on 16/2/1998: "I dream of a better use of the web possibilities and a cooperation of webpage owners or designers, to make a huge common work on aromatherapy and related subjects. Different people cooperating with the same purpose: making info available and enabling communication. If we would cooperate, one member would make some space on his/her pages for long updated references on books, another person could keep updated a huge link page, sorted by subject and country with clear descriptions, another making images available..."
